But of course, you don’t need to recreate the big, traditional spread to savor those flavors—in fact, why not mix things up with fun, fresh recreations that let you enjoy the meal in an all-new way?

Supreme seasonal pizza

If you’re one to enjoy a delicious, fully loaded supreme pizza, you will want to try this seasonal variant! There are no rules on how to craft a supreme leftovers pizza—simply pile ingredients such as cheese, shredded turkey breast, greens, onions, mushrooms and more atop a thin pizza crust. The result will be a bright, satisfying medley of color and flavor, an exciting way to make the most of your leftovers (and an easy appetizer for post-Thanksgiving get-togethers!).

Turkey panini with a twist

Sure, the post-Thanksgiving sandwich is a go-to for a reason. But why not mix things up a little? Swap in hearty, whole-grain bread for a deliciously textured foundation (one that’s sure to hold up to the pile of ingredients on top!). Layer on turkey, greens, mashed potatoes and gravy—in lieu of traditional mayo—and even a smear of cranberry sauce for a sweet touch that’s uniquely Thanksgiving. Warm up your sandwich in a press or on the griddle for that oh-so-satisfying crunch. It’s the perfect way to get more out of your Thanksgiving leftovers, especially if your Black Friday plans take you on the go and you need a hearty, handheld option.

Fried mashed potato bites

A deliciously pop-able appetizer option, fried mashed potato bites are the perfect addition to holiday movie nights, get-togethers with friends and even lazy days around the house. You can blend cold mashed potatoes with egg, cheese, bacon and other mix-ins for a flavorful touch, then roll in bread crumbs and fry. The end result? A light, satisfying snack that’s crunchy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, and fun just about all around.

Black Friday hash

Who doesn’t love a post-Thanksgiving nap—perhaps one that turns into a long slumber? If you wake up in the early morning feeling hungry, whip up a Black Friday hash that’s sure to get everyone up and ready to dig in. Simply mix together leftover potatoes, cheese, stuffing, turkey and anything else you might have on hand, fry it up, and enjoy! You can even place a sunny-side-up egg on top for a fun brunch-time touch.

Pumpkin pie trifle

Pumpkin pie is the quintessential Thanksgiving dessert, but there’s more than one way to enjoy its sweet, familiar flavor. One of our favorites is the pumpkin pie trifle, a uniquely European-inspired take on the dish. Separate parts of your leftover pie (i.e. the filling from the crust), and then mash each up separately so it can be scooped into a mason jar or glass. Follow the pattern of one layer crust, one layer pie filling and one layer whipped cream. Repeat twice and then top off with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of leftover crust crumbles, and you are good to go for an elegant yet effortless dessert!

Warm, creamy and comforting, clam chowder has been a longtime classic of New England cuisine for a reason.

While the familiar dish might make a great cold-weather meal, however, it’s easy to enjoy all year-round—even when Florida’s winter temperatures are anything but icy!

We’re taking a closer look at the dish we call clam chowder—and the way it won over the hearts of foodies from all around. Just read on.

A local treat

What makes clam chowder the quintessential New England treat?

While the dish likely made use of cooking styles carried over from France, Britain or Nova Scotia in early colonial times—from the 18^th century on—it also capitalized on an ingredient that was readily available throughout the region: clams. The seafood staple that states like Massachusetts and Rhode Island happily claim as their own, served as the foundation of an easy, no-fuss comfort food dish that would one day make them famous.

No messing with perfection

What goes into making a delicious clam chowder—or, depending on who you ask, “chowda?”

As it turns out, even the most diehard chowder fans know that the makings of their favorite dish are fairly straightforward. Most regional recipes call for a simple mix of clams, potatoes, diced onions and a creamy base that makes the chowder delightfully thick and hearty. Perfection happens in the preparation, and seasoned chefs know to take care with the clams so that they don’t overcook and become tough—instead, they maintain that tender perfection.

Of course, according to New England foodies, this is the way to make clam chowder—but other regional varieties have arisen all the same. Hatteras clam chowder, from North Carolina’s Outer Banks, for example, is distinct in its clearer, thinner base and addition of more ingredients. Particularly troubling to those who swear by the New England method is Manhattan or New York clam chowder, a dish whose base takes on a red hue thanks to the inclusion of tomatoes in the broth.

Those tomatoes are so troublesome, in fact, that in 1939, a Maine lawmaker tried to outlaw the practice of adding them completely! It seems there’s no messing with perfection when it comes to chowder… especially for the dish’s most ardent fans.

You can enjoy it solo, or as the starter to a hearty main steak or seafood course. Many people align themselves with sweet over savory dishes, or vice a versa. But what’s the big difference between the two—besides salt and sugar content—and is there a way to satisfy them both?

Sweet

When it comes to sweet dishes, they’re relatively easy to define. Whether due to the natural sweetness of fruits like strawberries, cherries, apples, and more, or the presence of added sugar in your favorite cake mix, sweet foods would be hard to miss.

Unlike savory foods (which we’ll get to in a minute), the sweetest foods can’t quite be gobbled up or eaten meal after meal. Their taste is so pleasing that too much of it might leave you feeling incomplete—like you went straight to dessert after skipping lunch or dinner.

Savory

Savory foods, on the other hand, fulfill that need for heartier mealtime substance. According to Merriam-Webster, to be savory is to “be pungently flavorful without sweetness.” In other words, savory foods (chicken, rice, steak, fries, etc.) possess a unique taste and completeness that doesn’t need to be balanced out by lighter, sweeter ingredients.

Of course, chefs can (and do) add those ingredients, anyway, for the sake of spicing up routine palates and creating something new…

Dishes that defy the norm

What about dishes that don’t fall strictly on one side or the other? Such dishes contain a unique meshing of two distinct flavors—and, somehow, it works!

Take, for example, our Ginger Lime Salmon. This is a dish whose savory foundation is amplified—not disguised—by the addition of traditionally sweeter ginger. Similarly, our Tuna Steak makes use of a coconut lime aioli that prevents the tuna from falling into “predictable” savory seafood territory.

Today, chefs are even taking the hybridization further with unique treats like bacon ice cream or even salted caramel, which can be easily worked into dinnertime dishes as well as desserts. Doing so makes cooking (and eating) exciting, as it flips our expectations of what a particular dish will taste like.

When it comes to cocktails, few are as universally known—or as beloved—as the martini.

It’s a staple of every bar across the globe, a longtime fixture whose influence has reached the most hallowed halls, storied political meetings, and, of course, the silver screen.

To us, of course, the martini is simply a classic we count on; a go-to treat that’s as perfect for workday dinners as it is weekend outings with friends.

Today, we’re taking a look at the history of this quintessential cocktail. Read on to learn more!

Birth of a classic

Like a dirty martini, the history of this cocktail isn’t always so clear—but we do have a few ideas of where it got its start.

The first prevailing theory is that the martini stems from the vermouth brand of Alessandro Martini, an Italian company, in 1863. There’s record of that—but what if the actual ingredients and the famous martini name came a little earlier?

That’s what the second theory suggests. According to this origin story, the cocktail came from San Francisco in the early 1860s. It is said that here, at the famed Occidental Hotel, people traveling to nearby Martinez via ferry would enjoy a similar drink before their trip. The Martinez cocktail was actually known for being much sweeter than the recipe we know today, thanks to the presence of maraschino.

The martini was created well before Prohibition in the United States—but when the twenties rolled around, the drink was able to survive and outlast the era. In fact, it actually thrived. This success can be attributed to the availability of illegal gin—a key martini ingredient—throughout the period.

More than a cocktail

For most of its history, the martini has been more than just a cocktail. It’s been a counter-symbol to Prohibition, a fixture of the 20^th century, and has even had a presence in politics: even President Franklin Roosevelt was said to have offered the drink as a show of diplomacy in 1943! Even in our most tumultuous times, then, it seems that the merit of the martini was never lost. And of course, who can forget how the world’s most famous spy, James Bond, immortalized the martini with those famous words: shaken, not stirred.

Modern twists for a modern drink

Bond took his martinis shaken, but that’s not the only way to switch up your drink. Modern martinis can be made with vodka in place of gin, for example. For a gourmet twist, we add bleu cheese-stuffed olives to our classic martinis! And of course, the sky’s the limit with sweet takes on the drink, with versions like the appletini or, here at Stonewood, the Blueberry Martini.

Calamari

Who said seafood was just for the summer, anyway?

Especially here in the Sunshine State, where fresh seafood abounds long into the fall and winter, you can’t go wrong with a delicious seafood dish to kick off your dinner. Enter Stonewood’s latest, the Calamari.

We’ve paired tender, hand-breaded, flash-friend calamari with another fried, snackable favorite—jalapeno rings—for a satisfying culinary experience. The addition of grilled lemon, a house-made lemon aioli and pineapple chili sauce ensures that this dish is anything but tame—and that’s exactly how we like it!

BLT & E Crab Stack

The classic BLT gets a fresh revamp in this exciting new dish. We’ve served up vine ripe tomatoes, smokehouse bacon, a hard-boiled egg and tender lump crab meat over layers of fresh field greens for a vibrant medley of color, texture and flavor. A house-made remoulade, basil pesto and timelessly tangy balsamic reduction keep the dish fun and unexpected, perfect for those diners who crave color and adventure on every plate.

Espresso Rubbed Beef Medallions

Espresso? Beef? Why not?

The two culinary staples make for surprising yet satisfying partners in this hearty entrée. We’ve rubbed our classic oak-grilled medallions in a rich espresso, then paired it all with a smooth, velvety bourbon mushroom sauce, creamy Romano cauliflower mash and roasted organic heirloom carrots for a dish that “wows,” especially if it’s your first time digging in!

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Both traditionalists and foodie innovators alike will enjoy this decadent dessert—after all, what would fall be without pumpkin?

Rosé Martini

Rosé is the bright, sweet drink du jour, but we bet you’ve never had it quite like this!

Cape Romano

The mystical offshore attraction of Cape Romano’s Dome House has had travelers scratching their heads for decades. As the oddball, domed white structure-on-stilts shifts farther out to sea, you can still catch a glimpse of its puzzling façade. How did it get there? Who called it “home?” Where is it going?

The answers to these questions can be found online with a quick cursory search—but the “unknown” side of things is, admittedly, a little more fun to think about, especially when it comes to visiting spooky spots on your Halloween adventure!

Located in Southwest Florida, near Marco Island, the scrubby shores of Cape Romano and the perplexing offshore attraction make for a great place to explore this Halloween season. Grab some photos or use the dome home as the backdrop to your UFO-inspired photo shoot—because as you’ll soon discover, there’s something almost extraterrestrial about the structure’s ultra-modern design! Its remote air lends an extra element of mystique to your trip, since the best glimpse of the dome typically comes from aboard a private vessel.

St. Augustine

Virtually every “old” city in America has its share of spooky stories and haunted locations—and with St. Augustine being the oldest of them all, you know it won’t disappoint!

Instead of being seen as downright scary, though, there’s a sort of exciting local charm behind St. Augustine’s lore—it’s something locals and visitors alike enjoy taking part in! Rather, the unique architecture of DeLand—a medley of old-fashioned Victorian facades and Renaissance revivals—makes it a great place to take a stroll during the lead-up to Halloween, when you’re in the mood to surround yourself with the spooky setting of the living past. Does it get much better than DeLand’s small-town streets and idyllic atmosphere? We don’t think so! – Couples’ culinary costumes: Go as a Double Espresso—with the two of you wearing white tops and cardboard-cut “coffee sleeves” to resemble your favorite post-dinner digestif. Or go as the timeless Ketchup and Fry, if you seriously love to snack!

Hosting events during the “golden hour,” the warm, glowing period between afternoon and twilight, is a great way to set the stage and also produces some wonderful photos with everything (from your food to the guests to the table décor) looking its absolute best.

What can we say about the Old Fashioned? It’s about as quintessential as cocktails come, a 19^th-century invention that has served as the go-to drink of choice for many over the last two centuries.

It is so quintessential, in fact, that there’s a glass named after it—the familiar short tumbler, whose wide opening provides plenty of room for “rocks” and aromatic notes to shine through.

When it comes to a classic like the Old Fashioned, there’s no messing with perfection—but there is a way to tweak the recipe to imbue an even sweeter seasonal flavor, perfect for those in search of a new favorite fall cocktail. Our solution? Simple—the addition of maple syrup.

Inside the Old Fashioned

What makes an Old Fashioned, an Old Fashioned?

Look to its name for a sign of its prestige—this drink has been around for quite a while, and for good reason!

Though the first reference to the Old Fashioned we could find was back in 1880—in a Chicago Tribune piece, citing the libations enjoyed after a certain candidate withdrew from the presidential race—we can surmise that the cocktail, in its basic form (a blend of sugar, whiskey and bitters), existed long before this. Or else, why would they dub it “old fashioned” at all?

From country to city

If Old Fashioneds originated over time, winning over public favor as a timeless drink of choice, does any one person or place lay claim to it like they do with, say, a Long Island Iced Tea?

As it turns out, one city has a special connection to the cocktail—but if you’re thinking the big city, think again!

The storied city in question is Louisville, Kentucky. It was here, they say, that the Old Fashioned truly came into form in 1881, at a gentlemen’s club where it was prepared in honor of aristocrat (and cocktail connoisseur) James Pepper. Being a bit of a “mover and shaker,” Pepper was able to introduce the “official” form of the cocktail—which, by this point, had probably already been enjoyed in social circles across America thanks to its simple, timeless preparation—to his friends in New York. The rest is history!

So, is the Old Fashioned, at its heart, a drink for city slickers or country dwellers? You be the judge! Today, its ubiquity in bars across America means it is easy to enjoy by all, though perhaps those from the region (especially the Bluegrass State) will always feel a special affinity for its simple flavor and Southern roots.

The sweet maple touch

Like we mentioned before, the Old Fashioned has always enjoyed a relatively simple preparation—perhaps that’s why it caught on so thoroughly! Its tried-and-true combination of sugar, whiskey, bitters and a light touch of citrus, with a cherry on top for good measure, just works. And that’s why our Maple Old Fashioned does, too!

By swapping in maple syrup for the already-present element of sweetness in the traditional Old Fashioned, we don’t mess with the time-tested formula—we simply make it even sweeter in that rustic, grounded way that a good maple syrup has always been good for.
