When most of us hear “clam chowder,” our minds jump to the familiar sight of the New England Variety: white in color and endlessly warm and soothing, this style of chowder features chopped clams, diced potatoes and a cream base.

This style of clam chowder hails from coastal France and England, and was delivered to the United States by way of Nova Scotian settlers. Here, is flourished as a mainstay of must-have New England cuisine since its introduction in the 18^th century. By 1836, it was being served up at institutions like Ye Olde Union Oyster House, the oldest continuously operating restaurant in America! (You can still enjoy a bowl of chowder at Ye Olde Union Oyster House to indulge your inner history buff—of course, you don’t need to travel nearly that far. Minorcan Clam Chowder

Minorcan Clam Chowder was brought to America’s oldest city, St. Augustine via Minorcan laborers (from the Spanish island of Minorca in the Mediterranean Sea). The tale of tapas

The tales about how tapas came to be are about as numerous as there are types of tapas to enjoy! Fortunately, the name itself gives us a big clue. “Tapa” means “cover” in Spanish, and many of the possible origin stories we’ve seen center around the use of a small piece of food to cover a beverage from sand or insects. Others suggest the name stems from the practice of placing one’s food on top of their beverage when there was no room for a table in crowded establishments, or serving hungry travelers small portions of food on the lid of a pot. Some even tie tapas to royalty—as the legend goes, King Alfonso X of Castille first popularized the practice of pairing one’s drink with a small snack in the 1200s when he used this method to recuperate from an illness.

What do most of these stories have in common? A turn from practicality to preference—while tapas may have served a utilitarian purpose at one time, a necessary accompaniment to a delicious drink, today they are sought after as culinary experiences of their own: delicious and effortless, a blank canvas for flavorful possibilities best expressed bite by bite.

Cool, creamy, coffee goodness. There’s a lot to love about Kahlúa! As we say “cheers” to this delicious liqueur on National Kahlúa Day Feb. 27, let’s take a closer look at its origins, ingredients, and some delicious ways to sip.

What’s in a name?

“Kahlúa” comes from the native Nahuatl language that predated Spanish in Mexico—it name means “House of the Acolhua people,” connecting the relatively modern drink (Kahlúa only officially came on the scene in the 1930s) with the long-running tradition and flavor of Mexico’s Aztec heritage.

A homegrown treat

While Kahlúa may be a 20^th-century invention, its ingredients have played an essential role in Mexican cuisine and culture for centuries, making it a truly homegrown treat. The drink is perhaps best known for its distinct coffee flavor, stemming from its inclusion of arabica beans, as well as rum and sugar for sweetness. But Kahlúa wouldn’t be Kahlúa without one unsung ingredient: the humble vanilla bean. Not only does vanilla lend a necessary sweetness and aromatic flair to Kahlúa’s strong, coffee-focused flavor profile, but the vanilla bean is actually a key player in regional cuisine! In fact, it is native to the area we now know as Mexico (its name meaning “little pod” in Spanish), and was unknown to Europe before conquistadors arrived in the area and brought it back to the Old World.

It comes as no surprise, then, that Kahlúa pairs perfectly with a wide variety of vanilla-based treats, including good-old-fashioned ice cream! Of course, there’s more than one way to indulge…

Trace the origins of Key Lime Pie

If you’re a Key Lime Pie connoisseur, you’ll want to explore the place where the first slice came to be! And that place might just be the water.

Key West’s gorgeous waters serve as the backdrop to everything from snorkeling to fishing to water sports and, as it turns out, whipping up a delicious pie. Or at least, an early version of it. According to some stories, Key West sponge fishermen who used key limes, eggs and canned milk to prepare an easy-to-enjoy dessert on board.

The modern Key Lime Pie recipe hasn’t actually grown too much more complex than this original recipe, besides some quick time in the oven for setting all the ingredients together. And we’re thankful for that. Key Lime Pie’s simple yet satisfying flavor profile is what makes it such a treat more than 100 years after its invention!

So bring a slice by the water and enjoy the same view those sponge fishermen did many years ago—or visit the Key West Shipwreck Museum to get a sense of how they might have lived.

Visit a Key West cultural landmark

Another must-do spot while embarking upon your Key West adventure? Ernest Hemingway’s home! The famous American author enjoyed (or, rather, helped define) the quintessential Key West lifestyle: spending days fishing on the water aboard the Pilar or writing novels on his typewriter, surrounded by the warmth and sunshine of his Old Florida digs; nights, kicking back at the Key West bar Sloppy Joe’s.  

While Hemingway wasn’t specifically known for his love of Key Lime Pie, it’s hard to imagine that he spent any time in Key West without enjoying the delicious dessert once or twice—he was born in 1899, after all, at the turn of the century when Key Lime Pie was first coming onto the scene!

Visiting Hemingway’s house is like stepping through history. You will be greeted by an Old Florida façade, a beautifully designed two-story home replete with a wraparound balcony porch and classic window shutters that, incidentally, sport a key lime-esque yellow-green coating. The whole property is surrounded by lush trees, lending an airy, back-to-nature feel to your visit. Step indoors to discover the setting where great stories where written—a setting that many six-toed cats, descendants of Hemingway’s own pet, still live today!

There’s something for everyone here. History buffs will enjoy discovering a piece of the past (incidentally, Hemingway’s home was the first in Key West to have an in-ground swimming pool). Literature lovers will savor the chance to see the place where Hemingway wrote some of his most well-known work. And, of course, those who are passionate about Key Lime Pie and all things Key West will love the chance to see Hemingway’s kitchen, and dream about the delicious dishes and desserts that might have been enjoyed there.
